I don’t know if I’m the only one that experiences the extreme incompetence that happens in this office. I get letters dated from three weeks ago. I email my caseworker the correct documentation I upload documentation into the common health website. I go in person when I can. I call my caseworkers and for some reason it feels like they have agenda against me or they’re just genuinely understaffed and disorganized. I have severe ADHD and I’ve been diagnosed since I was five. When I was pregnant, I was in a toxic relationship and I asked them for help and they gave me food stamps but as soon as the baby was out, they turned those food stamps off because I would not provide her fathers Social Security number because I live under his roof. I did not want them coming after him for anything because any assistance I asked for was for me alone not my daughter. They were able to turn my Medicaid back on. But somehow, the father of my child still received a bill so they have their ways. I went to them on multiple occasions trying to figure out how I could leave that situation with no help. I was told eventually that I could get a housing grant, but I had to have three months of employment. As the custodial parent, I didn’t know what to do and I felt helpless because I didn’t want to take her from him and I couldn’t complete the requirements. Four years later I finally got my housing grant 6 months after applying. I don’t know why I didn’t write this review sooner probably because I feel guilty about needing anything from the government, but it needs to be said and an ombudsman needs to look into this. From going in person and calling and emailing and getting my mail three weeks later, I’m just shocked at the runaround that I’ve been given and there’s no accountability. There’s nobody to hold accountable and when you go there, they basically just give you an email and a phone number and tell you good luck you don’t actually talk to anybody and you’re not given an option to.

Yolanda Ashlock was my social worker. If anyone is unfortunate to have her as a social worker I urge you to change immediately. She will not help you!!! She will never called you back. She won't do anything to help you.

Since being in Arlington, i have to be honest about my dissatisfaction with DHS services. I am currently dealing with some serious housing issues and cannot get assistance. The constant back and forth of seeking assistance via churches/organizations is difficult, and the DHS programs (DESIGNED TO ASSIST RESIDENTS) are literally refusing to help. I have reached out to the DIRECTORS (Ms. Sweeney- Arise, Ms. Bellamy- Pathforward, and Ms. Adams FHS supervisor, etc) and NONE of them have helped or responded. How are they still employed?! They are NOT doing their jobs. Arlington County is a wealthy city and I believe that DHS and affiliated programs should do more to help their residents!!

Have a brother who is bipolar and schizophrenic who is going through an extreme episode. Called the police and they requested a call to DHS. When the police arrived my brother walked away after seeing them. Showed the police videos of how he has been acting. Threatening violence, talking to himself, yelling at people, walking in the middle of the street, threatening to kill, and demanding money. The DHS person I spoke with refused to do anything to help. Claimed that because he was not here she didn’t want to come assess him. The police even told her that he is walking on foot and his location and they could easily find and detain him. If there is a crisis be sure to have someone call Emergency Services from your funeral and maybe then they might come to do their job.
