The way foreigners are 'welcomed' in Hoeilaart is distressing, even though they are already residents in Belgium. The municipality charges for services that are mandatory and therefore should be free. They are narrow-minded and suspicious, send you again and again a local policeman, who asks you a flurry of stupid questions and does not hesitate to push your door and to enter your house without your permission. When you complain to the regional police center, they do not want to hear, pretexting that speaking French or English does not respect the 'Flemish character of the area'. At the reception, they ask for your ID before you can even open your mouth - but their identities remain always concealed. Awful!

This is the best municipality you can find on the entire world. The people helping you are fellow citizens, and treat you as their neighbours or personal friend. On the procedural level they follow strict deadlines, and know how to escalate special situations to the manager, who has the creativity to find a solution and the guts to decide on what's needed in any situation.

My big compliments to this team and how it is managed.

Nice thing not to forget, is their focus on helping anyone, no matter which language they speak or background they have. Truly remarkable...
